MOVIN TRACIN

Before You Get MOVIN: MUST-Read

On this page

Set the stage before using MOVIN TRACIN. A few quick preps, and you'll be capturing studio-quality motion from day one. MAKE SURE you run through these five before your first session.

Every step counts. Once you’ve read through, use the checklist at the end of this page for a final check before you get started

🚫5 things to NOT MISS🚫

1. Mount TRACIN at 95 cm (37 in)

TRACIN sees your full body motion most clearly from one height, held perfectly still. A tripod and mount are recommended.

  • Height: 95 cm (37 in) from the ground. MOVIN TRACIN delivers its most stable capture at this height.
  • Tripod
    • Using the MOVIN tripod? Extend it fully - it sits at exactly 95 cm.
    • Using your own tripod? It must fit a 3/8-inch screw thread and hold TRACIN steady. We recommend a secure and stable tripods like SLIK PRO AL-323.
  • Mount
    • Add a mount for a secure link between tripod and TRACIN. It must also fit a 3/8-inch thread.
    • Attaching and detaching often? A quick-release mount like the iFootage Seastar Q1S makes it a one-click job.

2. Connect TRACIN directly to your PC with the included cables.

A direct connection keeps TRACIN and MOVIN Studio in perfect sync. Use the Ethernet cable and power supply from the box, and keep both connected throughout your session.

Note: many laptops no longer have an Ethernet port, so check before you start.

  • Direct ethernet - straight to your computer.
    • Routers or other network devices in between can cause communication errors.
    • Short on Ethernet ports? Use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter.
  • Power - keep it plugged in.
    • TRACIN has no power button - it turns on when plugged in, and needs continuous power while in use. For longer sessions, give your PC its own dedicated outlet too.
    • Wait for solid green light to appear (about 1–1.5 min) to make sure it is turned on.
    • No light for the first minute? That’s normal. TRACIN starts booting with the light off - you’ll only hear it running. After about 1 minute, the indicator starts blinking, then turns solid green. Solid green means TRACIN is ready.

Light off or still blinking? Unplug the power cable and plug it back in. This quick reset solves most power-related issues.

3. Check your PC specs.

For optimal performance, ensure your computer meets the following specifications:

  • Operating System: Windows 11 (64-bit) / Ubuntu
  • Processor: 3.0+ GHz i7 CPU
  • Memory: 16 GB or higher
  • Network: Dedicated 1 Gigabit Ethernet port (must be separate from your local network port)

4. Secure an open, clutter-free space for your mocap zone.

Giving TRACIN a clean view of every step is key to capture quality.

  • Distance: keep at least 1.2 m (4 ft) between TRACIN and the start of the Mocap Zone.
  • Maximum Size: the Mocap Zone goes up to 5 m wide × 5 m deep × 3 m high (16 × 16 × 10 ft).
  • Objects: remove everything from the zone. Something won't move? Shrink the zone around it in MOVIN Studio.
  • Reflections: remove mirrors, Scotch tape and any other reflective surfaces in the mocap zone.
  • Floor: on the surfaces below, lay down firmly secured floor mats for stability and performance.
    • Uneven textures (e.g. carpet)
    • Highly reflective materials (e.g. marble, glass)
    • Soft floors that pass vibration to the device

5. Dress your motion actor in fitted, non-reflective clothing.

TRACIN reads every movement of the body, so the closer the fit, the sharper the data.

  • Clothing
    • Slim-fit is best. Tight sportswear - compression wear, muscle-fit tops, leggings - is ideal.
    • Nothing that flaps. Skip lace, loose layers and accessories that swing during movement.
    • No reflective materials, on clothing or shoes.
    • Show where trousers end and shoes begin. Hems that cover the shoes can cause errors.
  • Hair & headwear
    • Long hair in a bun. Ponytails and loose hair swing during motion and can confuse tracking.
    • Need headwear? Go for a beanie or a short-brim cap that doesn't block neck tracking.
